Box Score
The University of Texas of the Permian Basin volleyball team wasted little time in taking care of business Tuesday night, defeating University of the Southwest in three sets 25-6, 25-12 and 25-13 in a packed Falcon Dome.
UTPB opened the match on a four point run with
Ariel Fralick serving. Leading later in the first set 12-6, the Falcons put together a tremendous scoring rally, winning 14 consecutive points on Fralick's serve to take set one 25-6.
Melissa Lusk was nearly perfect in the set, recording five kills on seven attempts with no errors as the UTPB defense held the Mustangs to a -.194 hitting percentage in dominating the set.
UT-Permian Basin climbed ahead fast in the second set again, winning eight straight to take an 11-2 advantage. The Falcons maintained a decisive advantage throughout the second set and scored three of the last four points on kills from
Morgann Davis and two from
Keeley Brogdon to win the set 25-12.
The Falcons strugged to get separation from Southwest in the early points of the third set as the Mustangs nearly matched UTPB point for point, keeping it close at 9-8. Three attack errors from Southwest and a
Hannah Rebb kill helped UTPB distance itself to lead 14-8, and the Falcons out-scored the Mustangs 11-5 over the remainder of the match, closing out the night on a block from Davis and
Erica Poe to wrap up the three set victory.
Brogdon led all players with 10 kills in the match while Lusk ended the night with eight kills on 12 attemps without committing an error.
Danae Eckart tallied 22 of the team's 52 digs and Fralick paced the Falcons with 17 assists.
UTPB returns to conference action this week, traveling to St. Mary's. Thursday's match in San Antonio, Texas, kicks off at 7 p.m.
