Keeley Brogdon led all players with 12 kills Wednesday night as The University of Texas of the Permian Basin volleyball team dispatched Wayland Baptist in three sets, defeating the Pioneers 25-18, 25-23 and 25-21.
Brogdon helped the Falcons hit .469 in the first set, totalling 15 kills on 32 attacks while committing no errors. UTPB never trailed in the first after capturing an early 4-1 lead. Wayland Baptist brought the opener to a tie four different times, knotting the score the last time at 16-16, but UTPB closed out the set on a six point run to take a 1-0 lead.
The Falcons were forced to play from behind in set two, trailing 3-0 early on. They rebounded to come back and take the lead at 5-4 on three straight kills, but soon found themselves trailing once again by three points. A pair of kills from
Melissa Lusk and
Hannah Rebb helped them take back the lead at 12-11, but six out of seven points to WBU put the home team up by four. UTPB turned the tables, scoring six of the next seven itself to go ahead 19-18. The teams traded points until UTPB scored three of the final four of set two, all on attack errors, to take a 2-0 advantage.
UTPB had to fight from behind once again in the third and final set, trailing early on 8-2 and later by seven as the Pioneers held a 14-7 advantage. The Falcons dominated the rest of the match on, coming back to tie the set at 16-16. UTPB once again distanced itself towards the end, taking six of the final eight points, four of them kills, to wrap up the straight-set victory.
Brogdon led all players with a .409 hitting percentage on the night, committing just 3 errors in 22 total attacks to help UTPB hit .252 as a team.
Jamie Rodell and Lusk each added nine kills on the night.
Danae Eckart led the team with 15 total digs while
Ariel Fralick led all Falcons with 25 assists.
UTPB stays on the road Thursday night, traveling to Oklahoma Panhandle State for a Heartland Conference contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
