St. Mary's out-rebounded The University of Texas of the Permian Basin 47-31 which led to 15 second chance points for the Rattlers which proved to be the difference as they took a 73-63 win over the Falcons.
Not only did the victory snap UTPB's four-game win streak, it was also the first setback at home for the Falcons this season.
The Falcons did get a season-high 20-point effort from
Taniqua Ards, but no other player finished in double-figures. St. Mary's on the other hand, had three with 10-or-more, led by Jackie Edwards' 24-point effort.
Tammy Acosta hit her only three-pointer of the game with 6:26 to play in the first, giving UTPB a 25-23 advantage, but it would be the last lead it would take the rest of the game. Edwards converted a layup with 5:28 before the break tying the game at 25 before she put the Rattlers up for good two-and-a-half minutes later with a 12-foot jumper in the paint. St. Mary's would take a 33-32 halftime edge.
The Rattlers opened the second half with a 16-4 run to lead 48-37, their largest of the game. Playing catch up the entire second half, UTPB pulled within five on several different occasions, but each time Edwards and the Rattlers stopped the threat.
Ards was 6-of-12 from the field, including 8-of-10 from the free throw line, while
Jessi Cowden finished with nine points and a team-high two steals. The Falcons shot 39 percent from the field, including 33 percent from behind the three-point line.
UTPB will hit the road for the first time since Dec. 3 when it heads to Fort Smith, Ark. to take on Arkansas-Fort Smith on Jan 14 at 2 p.m.
