The University of Texas of the Permian Basin men's basketball team had no answer for Kevin Kotzur, who put in 23 points, as St. Mary's ran away with an 83-68 win over the Falcons.
Kotzur, who missed just two shots the entire game, scored four points in the first half but was the go-to player in a 27-8 run that fueled a 78-59 lead with two minutes to play. Prior to the Rattler outburst, the teams exchanged buckets the entire game until Moses Sundufu's three-pointer started the surge.
All five Rattler starters scored in double-figures as they improved to 8-4 overall and 2-0 in Heartland Conference play.
In the first half, the lead changed eight different times with neither team going up by more than four until a 15-5 run gave St. Mary's a 31-22 lead with 3:55 to play. UTPB returned the favor by closing out the first half with a 12-2 surge to take a 34-33 halftime advantage after
Erik Martin's 12-foot jumper went in at the buzzer.
The second half started much like the first with the lead changing hands six different times until the Rattlers pulled away.
UTPB fell to 6-8 on the year and are now 0-2 in Heartland Conference play.
