It took a little over an hour for The University of Texas of the Permian Basin to take a 3-0 win over the University of the Southwest, holding the Mustangs to under 15 points in each of the three sets for its second-straight victory.
UTPB held the Mustangs to a -.101 hitting percentage, allowing just 13 kills while forcing 21 errors in the contest. The Falcons on the other hand, dominated every facet of the game as they tallied 34 kills with just 10 errors while picking up 39 digs defensively. As a team, they hit .333, the highest hitting percentage of the season thus far.
The Falcons struggled early in the first set as an attack error tied the game at eight, before scoring four-straight points to make it 12-8. A service error and attack error made it 12-10 before UTPB used a 5-0 run to lead 17-10. L'Deana Coffer stopped the Falcon rally with a kill before they outscored the Mustangs 8-3 the rest of the way for 25-14 victory.
The University of the Southwest started the second set with a 3-1 advantage after Ashley Fitzpatrick picked up one of her three kills on the night.
Terra Peil gave the Falcons the lead for good with a kill, giving them a 5-4 edge.
Melissa Lusk capped off a 6-1 run with one of her three kills in the set. UTPB never looked back as it would eventually lead 23-9 before a service error by the Falcons put the Mustangs in double digits. A service ace by
Alex Genung clinched game two with a 25-10 victory, giving the Falcons a 2-0 match advantage.
The third set was much like the second as UTPB jumped out to a 10-3 lead thanks to four kills and to aces by the Falcons. They would lead 22-9 before an attack error put the Mustangs back into double digits.
Jamie Rodell finished of the University of the Southwest with a kill and a 25-11 set victory.
UTPB (2-3) will hit the road again when it travels to San Angelo to participate in the Angelo State Tournament Friday and Saturday. There, they will take on Tarleton State, Southeastern Okla., Angelo State and Abilene Christian.
