The University of Texas of the Permian Basin opened its own tournament in fine fashion as it won both of its matches 3-0.  The Falcons opened with a Heartland Conference victory over Oklahoma Panhandle, before concluding day one with a 3-0 win over Southern Arkansas.

In the first match, UTPB cruised to a 25-18, 27-25, 25-13 win where Melissa Lusk had a near perfect match with 12 kills with just three errors in 19 attempts.  She also led the team with three of the team's six block assists.  As a team, the Falcons hit .323 and didn't have a player commit more than three hitting errors in the match.

The Falcons dominated the net defensively in the match against Southern Arkansas as they put down six solo blocks and 18 assisted blocks in their 25-17, 25-19, 25-16 thrashing of the Muleriders.  Jamie Rodell not only tied a team-high with six kills, but had five block assists and a solo blocks.  Lusk had four block assists to go along with four kills.  The Falcons blocking effort proved to be too much for Southern Arkansas as it hit just .038 for the match.

UTPB is now riding a three-match win streak and will look to make it two more tomorrow as it will face Fort Hays State at 3 p.m. and Cameron at 7 p.m. to conclude the 2011 UTPB Volleyball Classic.
