HOBBS, N.M. – The University of Texas of the Permian Basin snapped a three-match losing skid by taking a 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-22) win over the University of the Southwest.
UTPB picked up 16 block assists and three solo blocks with
Terra Peil leading the way with four assisted and one solo stuff. Peil was also a force on the offensive side of the net as she garnered seven kills with just two errors.
The Falcons struggled in the opening set as they never led by more than three points and trailed several times during the game. UTPB led 13-11 after
Alex Genung picked up her only kill of the match, but three-straight points by the Mustangs gave them a 14-13 advantage.
Melissa Lusk picked up a kill to give the Falcons a 15-14 lead which they would not lose the rest of the way.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 4-0 lead to open the second set, but a 16-2 run by the Falcons gave them a 16-6 lead and never looked back. A kill by
Jasmine Cannon gave UTPB a 25-13 win, giving it a 2-0 set advantage.
Like the first set, the Falcons had trouble shaking the Mustangs as the two teams exchanged points nearly the entire set. Erik Terril tied the match at 21 with a kill before Macy Olness gave the Mustangs their first lead with a cross-court kill.
Back-to-back hitting errors gave the Falcons a 23-22 edge before two-straight aces by
Sara Torres clinched the match for UTPB.
The Falcons evened their record at 8-8 on the year and will return home to host the UTPB Volleyball Classic on Friday and Saturday. The falcons will take on Panhandle State at 1 p.m. on Friday and Southern Arkansas at 7 p.m. On Saturday, UTPB will face Fort Hays State at 3 p.m. and Cameron at 7 p.m.
