It took a while for Midwestern State to get a point on the board, but once it did, the flood gates opened as the No. 12 Mustangs took a 5-0 victory over The University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
Chris Dwyer recorded a hat-trick by scoring the second, third and fourth goals on the night as Midwestern State improved to 5-1 on the season.
David Freeland broke a scoreless tie at the 30:37 mark when he received a through pass from B.A. Catney for his first score of the season. Catney's pass gave Freeland a one-on-one with goal keeper
Craig Branum, which his shot found the lower right corner of the net to give the Mustangs the early lead.
Dwyer scored his third goal of the season and first of the night just before halftime after one-timing in a long cross from Dean Lovegrove, making it 2-0. The Mustangs would hold the lead at the half after out-shooting UTPB 8-7 at the break.
Six-and-a-half minutes into the second half, Dwyer would strike again after converting a penalty kick making it 3-0 in favor of the Mustangs. His third and final goal of the night came at the 62
nd minute when he one-timed another cross, this time from Zach Funk.
Brett Helm joined the scoring brigade with his first goal of the year after heading in Funk's cross at the 73 minute mark.
The Mustangs would out-shoot UTPB 18-11 and held the Falcons to just two shots on goal.
German Chavarria and
Quentin Drake were the only Falcon players to get a shot off on goal.
The Falcons fell to 2-5 on the season and will return to action next Friday when they host St. Mary's at 4 p.m. on the UTPB Soccer Field.
