box score
Tyler Gibson scored two goals leading The University of Texas of the Permian Basin to a 3-1 victory over Hardin-Simmons in the season opener.
Gibson, who was last year's leading scorer, used his head and his feet as his first goal came at the 17:20 mark where he headed in a pass from
Shelby Sharp from the middle of the penalty box giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead. His second score came at the 62nd minute when he dribbled through two defenders before his shot found the bottom right corner of the net.
UTPB (1-0) dominated the game offensively as it took 22 shots, eight of which were on goal while the defense held the Cowboys to just six total shots and two on goal.
The Falcons held the lead for a little over 10 minutes before Zach Johnson tied the game on an unassisted goal that he shot from 25 yards out. The teams would go into the half tied at one before Sharp found the back of the net at the 50:27 mark that proved to be the game winner.
UTPB will be back in action on Sunday when it hosts Eastern New Mexico at 4 p.m. at the UTPB Soccer Complex.
