UTPB BASEBALL WINS FIRST, DROPS SECOND GAME OF A&M INTERNATIONAL SERIES

3/25/2011 9:46:54 PM

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin baseball team scored early and often as it pounded out 18 hits en route to a 12-6 win over Texas A&M International. The Dustdevils on the other hand, returned the favor in the second as they took a 4-0 victory in the nightcap.

All but two of UTPB's hits in the first game were singles as Travis Wilcox and Ryan Giacomini both picked up doubles in the win. Wilcox and Austin Wooldridge were RBI machines as both picked up four each. Wilcox went 2-for-4 with a run scored while Wooldridge went 2-for-2 with a walk.

Six players had multiple-hit games for the Falcons, including a 4-for-5 performance by Andy Quiring, who also scored three runs and drove in another. Leadoff hitter Chandler Goode was 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored, while Jeremy Miller and Garrett Wolff also had two hits each.

UTPB starter Felix Cardenas picked up his third victory of the season as he gave up two earned runs off eight hits while striking out 11 batters in six innings of work.

Three runs in both the first and second inning set the tone as the Falcons jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before the Dustdevils scored a lone run in the third. UTPB went on to put up two more in the fourth and four more in the fifth to give it a 12-1 advantage. A&M International would put up two in the sixth in three in the seventh but the threat would end there as the Falcons picked up their sixth-straight victory.

In the second game, A&M International's John Gonzales silenced the UTPB bats as he gave up just four hits as he pitched a complete-game shutout to give the Dustdevils a split on the day. Gonzales struck out four while walking two in picking up his fifth win of the season.

The two teams will play the third and final game of the series tomorrow at Roden Field at 1 p.m.
