SOFTBALLERS DROP FINAL TWO GAMES OF SERIES

3/19/2011 8:00:35 PM

St. Mary's improved to 5-1 in Heartland Conference play after taking two games from The University of Texas of the Permian Basin, winning the first 9-2 before a 3-1 victory in the second gave the Rattlers the series win.

In the first game, St. Mary's had 13 hits, including a home run by Lauren Miller, who went 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored. She was one of two players with three hits in the game as Jared Gonzalez was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

The Rattlers scored two in the first before UTPB cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first. Angle Castro hit an infield single that scored Alisha Carrasco, who led off the frame with a walk.

Four more runs in the third gave St. Mary's a comfortable 6-1 lead which was more than enough for Maricella Bissaro, who gave up two runs off four hits while striking out one.

Courtney Cernoch doubled down the right field line to score Tomie Ellard, who reached on a walk for the Falcons' second run of the game. St. Mary's answered with a run in the fourth before putting up two more in the seventh.

The second game saw the Rattlers break a scoreless tie in the fourth when Miller doubled down the left line to score Chelsea Wenske. Miller was 2-for-3 in the second game with two runs batted in.

Two more runs in the sixth inning gave St. Mary's a 3-0 lead before Chelsey Morgan put the Falcons on the board as her fielder's choice scored Cene Padilla

UTPB had its chances along the way as it left nine runners on base, but Emily Brittain, who pitched the final four innings, closed the door on the Falcons as she gave up a run off two hits to improve to 14-6 on the year.

The Falcons will be back in action on Wednesday when they head to Portales, N.M. to take on Eastern New Mexico.
