GOODWELL, Okla. – The University of Texas of the Permian Basin baseball team had its hitting shoes on as the Falcons combined for 20 hits en route to a sweep over Oklahoma Panhandle State. UTPB won the first game 13-2 before winning the nightcap 6-4. The opening-game victory gave head coach
Brian Reinke his 200
th victory at the helm for the Falcons.
Jeremy Miller had a field day at the plate as he picked up seven hits on the day, including a 5-for-5 performance with five RBI and three runs scored in the first game. The Falcons pounded out 12 hits in the opener with Miller hitting a triple and home run, while
Garrett Wolff had a double.
UTPB scored two runs in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings before busting out with five runs in the seventh.
Felix Cardenas pitched six strong innings where he gave up just one earned run off six hits while striking out a season-high 11 batters.
Dylan Giesler came in for the final inning where he gave up two hits and struck out three.
In the second game, Panhandle State jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning on an RBI single by Andy Klaus. UTPB tied the game in the top of the fourth when
Ryan Giacomini hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate Wolff, who led off the inning with a double.
UTPB took advantage of erratic pitching in the fifth as
Andy Quiring reached on an error to lead off the inning and would later move to second on a wild pitch. A groundout moved Quiring to third before another wild pitch allowed him to score and gave the Falcons a 2-1 edge.
The lead would not last long as another RBI single by the Aggies tied the game at two. The teams would exchange runs for the next two innings until UTPB used a three-run eighth to give it the lead for good.
UTPB improved to 10-14 on the year and 6-8 in Heartland Conference play and are now riding a three-game win streak.
The teams will play the third and final game tomorrow at 1 p.m.
