2/19/2011 12:31:08 PM

SAN ANTONIO - St. Mary's pounded out 14 hits, including four for extra-bases, and scored 10 runs in the third inning to eventually take a 15-5 win over the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.

The Falcons got off on the right foot as they picked up two hits in the top of the first inning. Andy Quiring hit a one-out single up the middle before Travis Wilcox reached on a two-out walk moving Quiring to second. A single by Austin Wooldridge drove in Quiring giving UTPB an early 1-0 lead.

The score would remain that way until the Falcon pitching had trouble finding the strike zone while the defense made two errors. The Falcons walked two batters and hit another as the Rattlers took a 3-1 lead. The offensive onslaught began in the third where the Rattlers racked up 10 runs off seven hits including a two-run homer.

UTPB tried to cut into the lead in the top of the fourth when it picked up two more runs off three hits. Chandler Goode and Quiring both hit RBI singles, driving in Garrett Wolff and Michael Rice.

St. Mary's would answer in the bottom of the fifth with two more runs, giving it a 15-3 advantage. The Falcons would score two more in the sixth, but not enough to keep the game going the scheduled nine innings.

UTPB fell to 4-6 overall and 3-4 in Heartland Conference play. The Falcons will stay in San Antonio when they take on the University of the Incarnate Word tomorrow at 1 p.m.
