SAN ANTONIO – St. Mary's was able to overcome five errors to win the first two games of the three-game series, winning the first 2-1 before taking a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.
Despite two errors in the first game, the Rattlers broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly which proved to be enough. UTPB threatened in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with one out, but a strikeout and a fly out killed the rally as the Falcons went three-up, three-down in the final two innings.
Starter
Felix Cardenas pitched well enough to win, giving up two earned runs on just five hits while striking out six.
In the second game, the Rattlers erupted for three runs in the bottom of the second followed by a lone run in the third. The Falcons were not able to get anything going offensively as they went without a hit until
Garrett Wolff broke up the no-hitter in the top of the seventh with a single to right. UTPB capitalized on two errors in the frame by St. Mary's by scoring two runs, cutting the lead to 4-2.
UTPB was able to pick up two more hits the rest of the way, but would not threaten. Wolff picked up two of the team's four hits, while
Michael Rice picked up the lone RBI.
Connor Lewis started for the Falcons, going six innings, giving up six runs off four hits, while
Jacob Ricossa pitched two innings without giving up a hit.
The Falcons fell to 4-5 on the year and will try to salvage the third game of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. in San Antonio.
