WAYLAND BAPTIST USES COMEBACK TO DOWN FALCONS

2/13/2011 12:00:15 PM

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin jumped out to 5-0 and 8-4 leads, but Wayland Baptist erased them both, and then held off the Falcons in the top of the ninth to win the final game of the 2011 UTPB Classic 10-9.

The Pioneers were able to overcome four fielding errors which led to six unearned runs and out-hit the Falcons 14-10, including back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the sixth. Kevin Hennessey hit a three-run blast to left-center field before Brian Embery hit a solo shot that cleared the center field wall. Their homers were part of a four-run sixth that cut the Falcon lead to 5-4.

UTPB took advantage of a two-out error in the top of the third which led to five unearned runs to break a scoreless tie. Michael Rice led off the inning with a walk and would later move to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brantley Miller and a deep fly by Chandler Goode. Rice would eventually come around to score when Ryne Head reached on an error by Wayland Baptist third baseman Miguel Pagan. Austin Wooldridge picked up his first triple of the season to score Head before Jeremy Miller singled him in. Singles by Travis Wilcox and Ryan Giacomini plated two more runs to give the Falcons a 5-0 cushion.

The score would remain that way until the back-to-back homers, but three more runs by UTPB in the top of the seventh gave it an 8-4 edge. Jeremy Miller started the rally with a one-out double up the middle before Travis Wilcox reached on another error by Pagan moving Miller to third. A failed pickoff attempt by Jobi Sanchez allowed Miller to score and moved Wilcox to second. Garrett Wolff singled up the middle to move Wilcox to third before Giacomini doubled to right to score Wilcox and Wolff.

Wayland Baptist used the long-ball once again in the bottom of the seventh as it answered with four more runs to the game at eight. Pagan made up for his pair of errors in the field by hitting bases loaded double to right center driving in all three runs. The Pioneers would later tie the game on a fielder's choice by Ben Christian to score Pagan.

The bottom of the eighth saw Eddie Allen reach second after a single, but a bobble by the Falcons in the outfield allowed him to take the extra base. Aldo Mendez was able to hit it over the head of Goode in center to double in Allen to give the Pioneers a 9-8 lead. Mendez would later come around to score on a sacrifice fly by Hennessey.

UTPB made it interesting in the top of the ninth when Miller led off the inning with a walk before Wilcox drove him in with an RBI double to left center. The momentum would not last long as Mendez, who came in relief in the eighth, struck out the next two batters then pitched a ground out to end the game.

The Falcons fell to 4-3 on the year, while Wayland Baptist improved to 6-5. UTPB will return to action on Friday and Saturday for a three-game series against St. Mary's in San Antonio.
