The runs kept pouring in for the University of Texas of the Permian Basin baseball team in its second game of the UTPB Classic as the Falcons needed just seven innings once again to beat Eastern New Mexico 10-0. The tables were turned in the Falcons' second game of the day as New Mexico Highlands came away with a 4-0 victory.
In the Eastern New Mexico game,
Chandler Goode went 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and three runs batted in while
Andy Quiring,
Ryan Giacomini and
Ryne Head picked up two hits each. As a team, the Falcons pounded out 12 hits while starter
Felix Cardenas faced one more than the minimum as he was nearly flawless on the mound. The 10 runs marked the second-straight game the Falcons have won in seven innings due to the 10-run rule and was also the second-straight shutout.
The preseason All-South Central Region selection allowed just three hits and struck out three and didn't allow a runner to reach second base as he picked up his first victory of the season.
UTPB put up five runs in the bottom of the second off four hits, including a three-run double by Goode to plate
Brantley Miller, Head and Giacomini. The Falcons would add to their cushion in the fifth with three more runs followed by two more in the sixth.
Eastern threatened in the top half of the seventh inning as it loaded the bases, but a one-out fly ball to
Stephen Hrebicek in right field, who not only caught the ball for the second out, but threw out the running tagging from third to end the game.
In the second game on Christensen Stadium in Midland, New Mexico Highlands scored a single run in the fourth inning which proved to be enough for starter Kyle Sayers who silenced the Falcon bats giving up just four hits without a run in six innings with 11 strikeouts. They would tack on three more in the sixth inning off three hits.
UTPB threatened in the bottom of the ninth inning as it had runners on second and third but were unable to bring them home. The Falcons fell to 4-2 overall and will play the final game of the 2011 UTPB Classic tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Midland.
