FALCONS SET SCORING RECORD IN HOME OPENER

2/11/2011 11:57:32 AM

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin baseball team had its hitting shoes on in the home opener as the Falcons pounded out 25 hits and scored a school-record 29 runs. Not only did the hitters have their way, a trio of pitchers allowed just three hits while tossing a shutout.

All 13 batters that went to the plate for UTPB picked up at least one hit, while seven had two-or-more base hits. Jeremy Miller and Ryan Giacomini had four hits each. Miller went 4-for-7 with five RBI and four runs scored while Giacomini was nearly as impressive by going 4-for-6 with four runs batted in and scored two times.

UTPB starter Kyle Cormier pitched a solid five innings, allowing just two hits while striking out eight and walking one for his first win of the season. Kyle Bandujo pitched the sixth, allowing one hit before Tanner Neuberger closed the door on the Orediggers by striking out two of the three batters he faced in the bottom of the seventh.

After scoring six runs in the top of the first, the Falcons set the tone for what was to come the rest of the game. They would jump out to a 15-0 lead after the top of the first after putting up three more in the second and another six spot in the third. UTPB would score at least two more runs in but the sixth inning, including eight in the seventh.

The Falcons sent 49 batters to the plate and picked up 21 RBI and had four extra-base hits including a triple by Miller.

The Falcons will take on Eastern New Mexico at 2 p.m. at Roden Field tomorrow, followed by a 6 p.m. contest against New Mexico Highlands at Christensen Stadium in Midland.
