CANYON – The University of Texas of the Permian Basin men's basketball team trailed by 18 in the first half after scoring just 13 points and never recovered as West Texas A&M took a 61-45 win over the Falcons.
UTPB made just five field goals in the first half and missed all four free throw attempts while the Buffs hit 56.5 percent from the field.
The Buffs took advantage inside, scoring 32 points in the paint and shooting 59 percent from the field for the game. Kennon Washington was the biggest Falcon killer as he put in a game-high 22 points while two others scored in double-figures for West Texas.
The Falcons didn't score their first points of the game until the 12:29 mark when
Rodney Hudson made a layup. By that time, West Texas A&M held a 10-2 lead. It would be nearly five minutes later until
Klein Harper put in the second bucket of the game for UTPB. It would hit three three-pointers to close out the half.
The Falcons finally found their shooting touch in the second half as they shot 55 percent in the final period and pulled within nine with 3:22 to play, but would not score again the rest of the half.
The loss snapped a two-game win streak for UTPB, which fell to 4-6 on the season.
Erik Martin led the Falcons with 12 points, while
Madison Turner put in eight. UTPB will host Sul Ross at 3 p.m. on Monday for its first home game since Nov. 26.
