“A win and we're in” is the mindset for the women's soccer team at The University of Texas of the Permian Basin women's soccer team, but instead had to settle for a 2-2 double-overtime tie against Newman in the final home match of the season. UTPB is fighting for the fourth and final spot to qualify for the Heartland Conference Tournament, but is now in a must-win situation against the Dustdevils in the final match of the regular season.
The Falcons, who were celebrating senior day, had contributions from all three players that were playing their final home matches of their careers.
Lyndsey Thomas scored the first goal of the match, while
Elyssa Hawkins registered an assist on the match-tying goal by
Hannah Dozier. Dozier also had an assist on the Thomas score.
UTPB came out firing early as Thomas one-timed a pass from Dozier three and a half minutes into the match, giving the Falcons an early 1-0 lead. Dozier stole the ball from a Newman defender inside the box then quickly crossed the ball to Thomas.
The Falcons would hold the lead until Bianca Torres tied the match at the 24:54 mark when she scored from 40 yards out. The teams would go into the half tied at one.
Alison Petrillose put the Jets up at the 47
th minute as she put in a free kick just outside the penalty box.
Seconds into the 60
th minute, Dozier put in her team-high seventh goal of the season as Hawkins gave her a through pass, which she put in from 15 yards out.
Newman out-shot UTPB 29-18, including 13-12 in shots on goal.
Kourtnye Chandler and Dozier were the bulk of the Falcon offense as they combined for nine shots, with Chandler leading the way with five.
Alexis Frueh was solid in goal, picking up 11 saves in the draw.
The Falcons now sit at 3-12-1 and 2-6-1 in Heartland Conference play. The Falcons and A&M International will square off Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Laredo.
