Heather Sanchez picked up her fifth double-double of the season, including her second in as many matches to help lead The University of Texas of the Permian Basin to a 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 21-25, 25-16) win over Dallas Baptist.
The Senior from San Antonio tallied 11 kills with 10 digs and hit .250 for the match while
Melissa Lusk added a team-high 12 kills without an error. UTPB improved to 15-13 overall and 6-5 in Heartland Conference play.
Other than the third set, the Falcons were never threatened in the match as they swept the series, winning both contests in four games. In the first set, UTPB broke a 5-5 tie with a 13-8 run to lead 18-13, its largest lead of the opener. The Patriots would come within two (18-20), but the Falcons closed out the set with a 5-2 run for the early lead.
The Falcons dominated the second set as they jumped out to a 10-2 lead and held a least a six-point advantage the rest of the way. UTPB would go on to take a commanding two set lead after its 25-17 second set win.
The third set saw the two teams go back and fourth until Cameron Hartson's kill gave Dallas Baptist the lead for good. UTPB would tie the set on three different occasions, but was unable close out the match.
The fourth and deciding set was close early but an 11-4 run by the Falcons broke open a 4-4 tie. UTPB closed out the match by out-scoring Dallas Baptist 10-8 for the victory.
UTPB had season-high nine aces in Heartland Conference matches including four by
Alex Genung and three by
Ariel Fralick.
Jamie Rodell added 10 kills with just three errors in the win.
The Falcons will return home for a non-conference matchup against Wayland Baptist on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
