The University of Texas of the Permian Basin volleyball team pushed its opponents to five sets in both matches, but came up on the short end as the Falcons fell to Fort Hays State (25-20, 21-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-10) and Cameron (22-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-8).
In the Fort Hays match,
Melissa Lusk, who was named to the all-tournament team, and
Heather Sanchez combined for 22 kills with Lusk leading the way with 12, while Sanchez added 10. The Tigers garnered 63 kills in the five-set match and had three players with at least 10 in the victory. Madison Schwartz led the way with 18 while Sara Hewson had 15. The Falcons on the other hand, picked up 43 which proved to be the difference in the contest.
Defensively,
Danae Eckart picked up 31 digs to lead all players, while Lusk,
Jamie Rodell and Sanchez had three block assists each.
In the Cameron match, the Falcons dominated the first two sets, taking a 2-0 game advantage before the Aggies stormed back to win the next three after the 10-minute break. Lusk led UTPB offensively once again with 12 kills with just two errors while Rodell had 11. Like the first match earlier in the day, Cameron out-killed UTPB 71-51. Tournament MVP Kelle Carver rattled off 30 kills and was one of three players with at least 10 in the contest.
The Falcons will hit the road for their next three matches as they will take on Newman, Arkansas-Fort Smith and Central Oklahoma. UTPB will return home on Oct. 13 when St. Mary's comes to Odessa for a Heartland Conference matchup.
