STEPHENVILLE – The University of Texas of the Permian Basin men's basketball team picked up its first victory of the season after downing Angelo State 60-56 in the second game of the Tarleton State Tipoff Classic.
For the second-straight night, Jamal Holden led the Falcons in scoring with 20 points and was one of three players in double-figures with John Wolfe and Erik Martin chipping in with 14 and 13 respectively.
The Falcons (1-2) dominated the paint, out-rebounding the Rams 35-27 and out-scored them in the paint 28-14. The rebounding advantage also led to 12 second chance points. Martin led the way in pull downs with seven, while Wolfe added six.
UTPB trailed by as many as eight in the first half with 6:00 to go before the break, but a 12-3 run to close out the half gave the Falcons a 31-30 advantage into the locker room. The Falcons made the most of their chances, scoring 11 second-chance points, while the bench chipped in with seven points as well.
The teams would exchange points in the second half until the Rams took a 42-37 lead after LaMarshall Corbett, who scored a game-high 21 points, made a 12-footer with 9:04 to go. Angelo State would keep the lead until Holden tied the game at 47 with 5:12 to go then Klein Harper gave the Falcons a 48-47 lead with 4:47 to go after making the front end of a pair of free throws.
After a brief lead by ASU, Holden sank a pair of free throws to give UTPB a 50-49 lead with 3:54 to go. The Falcons would not lose the lead the rest of the way.
The Falcons will try to even their record on Wednesday when they travel to Alpine to take on Sul Ross State at 3 p.m.
