STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton State used a 22-4 run late in the first half to pull away from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin and held on to take an 81-66 win over the Falcons.
UTPB held a 12-7 lead with 12:25 to go before the break on a jumper by Erik Martin, but the Falcons would score just 12 points the rest of the half as the Texans took a 41-24 lead into the locker room.
Tarleton State rode the hot hand of Corin Henry, who poured in 29 points on 8-of-14 shooting and made a living at the free throw line by converting 11-of-15 freebies. Devon Hills and Warren Webb also chipped in with 17 points each.
The Falcons countered with 19 points from Jamal Holden and 10 more from Erik Martin, but outside of three other players, nobody scored more than four points.
UTPB was able to pull within 10 (54-44) with 12:03 to go on a pair of free throws by Holden, but would come no closer the rest of the way. He would hit two more from the charity stripe with 7:42 to go making the score 66-54, but the Falcons would not score again until Ke'Andre Derrick sank two free throws over three minutes later. By that time Tarleton held a 71-56 advantage. To make matters worse for the Falcons, they went nearly five minutes without a field goal during the scoring drought.
The Falcons shot 41 percent from the field and drained 7-of-16 three pointers as they fell to 0-2 on the season. UTPB will remain in action tomorrow when it faces Angelo State in the Tarleton State Classic.
