PLAINVIEW – The University of Texas of the Permian Basin was never able to get its offense in gear as the Falcons dropped a 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-18) decision to Wayland Baptist.
UTPB hit .082 for the match, collecting 33 kills in 122 attempts led by Alex Genung, who finished with nine, while Terra Peil and Jaime Rodell had six each. The Pioneers on the other hand, tallied just five more kills than the Falcons, but were much more efficient as they hit .207 for the match while committing 10 fewer errors.
Wayland Baptist jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the first set, but the Falcons were able to pull within five (16-11), but would come no closer the rest of the way. The second set started much like the first as the pioneers jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but the Falcons used a 4-1 run to eventually tie the game at five. The momentum would not last long as Wayland Baptist scoured four-straight points to lead 8-6.
The Falcons countered with a burst of their own, scoring six of the next seven points for their first lead of the contest (13-11) after a Wayland Baptist service error. UTPB would eventually lead 16-15, but four-straight points by the Pioneers game them a 19-16 lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
Libero Danae Eckart led the way defensively for UTPB with 18 digs, while Genung added 13.
UTPB will return home on Thursday to host Newman at 7 p.m.
