box score
For the second time this season, the University of Texas of the Permian Basin men's soccer team scored three-or-more goals, as the Falcons took a commanding 3-1 win over Newman in Heartland Conference play. Three different UTPB players scored in what was probably the best all-around effort by the Falcons this season.
The Falcons were able to fire off 21 shots on the game, eight of which were on goal, including three by Tyler Gibson. The freshman made one of those count as he gave UTPB a 2-0 lead at the 58:29 mark when he beat goal keeper James Esquivel on a breakaway for his sixth goal of the season.
The Falcons caught a break midway through the first half when Esquivel picked up the ball outside of the box, allowing the Falcons to have a direct kick just outside the penalty area. Jose Anchondo made the most of the mistake and his shot found the upper right corner of the net to give UTPB a 1-0 advantage.
UTPB would make it 3-0 at the 69:49 mark when Gibson found a wide open Marcelo Andres on the right side. Andres settled the ball before striking it past Esquivel for the score.
The Falcons nearly pulled off their second shutout of the year, but Nathan Nece headed in a cross from the left side by Nicos Esquivel for the score. As a team, the Jets had 20 shots, 11 of which were on goal, including three by Jordan Saybounkham.
UTPB Goal keeper Chris Benavides kept Newman in check for the nearly 75 minutes he was in goal as he saved eight shots and didn't allow a score.
With the win, the Falcons improved to 3-13 on the year and 3-4 in Heartland Conference play. They will conclude their season on Friday when they travel to Austin to take on St. Edward's.
