It took overtime to do it, but the University of Texas of the Permian Basin women's soccer team picked up its first Heartland Conference win of the season when Kaylen Gerkey made a penalty kick in overtime to lift the Falcons to a 3-2 win over Texas A&M International.
Even though the Falcons pulled out a victory, it might be one that head coach Dennis Peterson soon forgets as both teams combined for four yellow and three red cards. Both teams were playing shorthanded in the first half as two A&M International players and one UTPB team member was tossed due to the red cards.
Gerkey's made penalty kick came 4:05 into overtime for her fifth goal of the season. Hannah Dozier and Saide Moya had a one-two punch going in the game as they teamed up to score the Falcons' first two goals of the contest. Dozier's first goal came at the 7:53 mark when Moya's pass got past the TAMIU defense. Dozier received the pass inside the box and beat goal keeper Sasha Scott to give the Falcons the early lead.
The lead wouldn't last long for UTPB as Shelby Williams tied the match at one when her direct after a UTPB foul just outside of the penalty box found the left side of the net.
Dozier and Moya would team up again at the 24:10 mark on a similar goal as the first. Moya was able to get a pass through the Dustdevil defense where Dozier was there to tap in the shot to put the Falcons up 2-1.
The score would remain that way until Sol Medina scored on a near identical goal as Williams off a direct kick outside the box.
Both teams had numerous chances down the stretch, but neither were able to convert in regulation. UTPB had a flurry of shots in the first two minutes of the overtime period, but a foul by TAMIU inside the box gave the Falcons a penalty kick and the victory.
UTPB improved to 4-11-1 on the year and 1-7 in Heartland Conference. The Falcons will get a short break before they head to Austin to take on St. Edward's on Saturday at 1 p.m.
