Gavin Lutman started as wide receivers coach for the UTPB football team in May 2026. Lutman is a former NFL and CFL wide receiver who in college, was an NCAA Division II All-American and a National Champion.
Before UTPB, Lutman spent two seasons at Western New Mexico University. He served as the wide receivers coach during the 2024 season, the offensive coordinator during the 2025 season, and by the time he left, he was named Associate Head Coach. He was also the Mustangs' recruiting coordinator during his time in Silver City, New Mexico.
During his season as OC at WNMU, Lutman coached the Lone Star Conference Offensive Freshman of the Year (quarterback) and saw the offense increase its All-LSC sections by 200 percent. Under Lutman, the Mustangs' offense also boosted its points per game by 56 percent (reaching 29 PPG), improved its efficiency by 22 percent (totaling 247 first downs), and increased its passing yards by over 1,000 yards (45 percent increase). In addition, passing touchdowns increased by 106 percent, total yards increased by over 100 yards per game, total touchdowns increased by 66 percent (45 total touchdowns), and completion percentage improved to 62 percent. Lutman's offense held several NCAA Division II national rankings, including: passing touchdowns (No. 6), passing yardage (No. 8), passing yards per game (No. 8), first downs (No. 21), and completion percentage (No. 35).
Lutman has previously been the head coach at Mountain Ridge High School, the offensive coordinator at Cactus Shadows High School, and the head freshman coach at Horizon High School.
Lutman played collegiately at Pittsburg State University, where he was a key contributor to the Gorillas’ 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship team. Over the course of his career, he earned Second-Team Division II All-American honors in 2014, was named Second-Team All-Super Region III in 2013, and helped lead Pitt State to a conference co-championship in 2014.
Following college, Lutman signed with the Minnesota Vikings in 2015 and later spent time with the Tennessee Titans in 2016 as part of their offseason and practice squads. He also played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.
Lutman earned Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degrees in management and marketing from Pittsburg State University, where he also earned academic recognition:Â Deans Scholastic Honors, Capital One All-Academic, and All-Conference Honor Roll.
Lutman brings a championship mindset and a deep understanding of offensive football to his role at UTPB.
