NCAA Rules You Should Know
The following are some general NCAA guidelines that pertain to a coach's recruitment of you.
 
Emails/Faxes/Text Messaging
  • UTPB may not provide athletically related recruiting materials (including electronic mail and faxes) to a prospect (or prospect's parents, legal guardians, or coaches) until June 15th before a prospect's junior year in high school.
 
Telephone Calls
  • Telephone calls to a prospect (or prospect's relatives or legal guardians) may not be made before June 15 immediately preceding the prospect's Junior year in high school.
  • Representatives of athletics interest (boosters) are not permitted to make telephone calls to prospects.
 
In-Person, Off-Campus Contact
  • In-person, off-campus recruiting contacts shall not be made with a prospect (or prospect's relatives or legal guardians) may not be made before June 15 immediately preceding the prospect's junior year in high school.
  • A contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect (or prospect's relatives or legal guardians) and a UTPB staff member or athletics representative during which any dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting.
 
Athlete Graduation Rates and EADA Report
The NCAA requires all institutions to submit graduation rates for its student athletes. UTPB did not award any athletic scholarships until 2003. The graduation rate listed in the report is the 6-year graduation rate for all freshmen receiving athletic based aid.

NCAA General Freshman Eligibility Requirements

As an incoming freshman who desires to participate in NCAA Division II athletics, you must be cleared by the NCAA Eligibility Center in order to play as a freshman. You must be cleared academically and as an amateur in your sport.

If you are a senior in high school you should sign up as soon as possible in order to reduce any potential delays in the processing of your application. You can visit the Eligibility Center website by clicking here.
  • You must have an official high school transcript sent by your high school to the NCAA Eligibility Center.
  • You must have an official SAT or ACT score sent directly from the testing agency to the NCAA Eligibility Center.  If you have not yet taken an ACT or SAT, do so as soon as possible. Here are links to the SAT and ACT registration pages:
  • As soon as you graduate from high school your high school must send the Eligibility Center your final transcript before the certification process can be completed.
  • If you have taken any college work while in high school, your college transcripts must also be sent to the Eligibility Center before final certification is completed.
 
Generally to be able to practice and play at an NCAA II school as a freshman you must:
  • Have at least a 2.0 GPA in an academic core of 16 high school courses
  • Have an SAT of 820+ (verbal and math scores only) or a composite ACT of 68+. The SAT or ACT must be taken on a national testing date.
  • Generally, if you are taking the recommended or distinguished curriculum in Texas High Schools, you will have completed the 16 core course requirement.
  • You must complete the NCAA Amateurism Certification questionnaire with the Eligibility Center and be classified as an amateur.

NCAA General Transfer Eligibility Requirements

If you were not enrolled full-time in an NCAA Division I or Division II institution before the fall of 2007, you will have to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center and complete the Amateur Certification Process in your sport. You will not be required to complete the academic certification as a general rule. Click here to visit the NCAA Eligibility Center website.

To be eligible as a transfer student upon entering UTPB you must generally have:
  • Averaged 12 hours a semester that transfer to UTPB for each semester of college attendance or graduated from your two year school with at least 25% of the credits toward your degree having come from the institution granting your degree.
  • Have a GPA of 2.0 or higher for all work transferable to UTPB
  • Have attended your college for at least two full-time semesters
  • Be in good academic standing at your college
  • Have no history of behavioral problems
  • Be an amateur
  • Not been in college for more than 10 semesters

Freshman Applicants (0 - 23 semester hours)


Electronic Application

You should complete a freshman application if you are a high school student with no previous college attendance, or if you have taken or are taking college courses while still in high school. You should also complete a freshman application if you have enrolled for college classes after graduating from high school but have not yet completed 23 semester hours of college-level work or if you enrolled but withdrew from the college before earning any credit.
 
A transfer freshman is one who has enrolled (fall or spring term) in a college or university after graduating from high school and either withdrew before completing any hours or has completed 23 or fewer semester hours.

The following is required to apply to UTPB:
  • Completed application form & residency questionnaire by completing the electronic application or printable application
  • Official High School transcript showing grade average, class rank, or APPROXIMATE class rank and date of or expected date of graduation
  • SAT or ACT exam scores
  • If you are not sure about the admission requirements go to Freshmen Admission Requirements for additional information.

    Prior to enrollment students must show:
  • Proof of having passed all sections of TAKS (Texas students)
  • Proof of having complied with TSI requirement (THEA/TASP, Etc.)
  • Meningitis Vaccination
 
Transfer Applicants (24 or more semester hours)

Electronic Application

If you have completed 24 or more semester hours of college credit but have not yet obtained a bachelor's degree, you should complete a transfer student application. You should complete the transfer student application if you are either degree or non-degree seeking or a transient. A transient refers to a student that is enrolled in another college and wishes to apply as a transient student and transfer courses back to the home institution. You should also complete a transfer application if you are pursuing a second bachelor's degree.

The following is required to apply to UTPB:
  • Completed application form & residency questionnaire by completing the electronic application or printable application.
  • Official transcripts from all colleges/universities previously attended if only for a short period of time.
  • Proof of having complied with TSI requirement (THEA/TASP, Etc.)
