Women’s soccer battles LCU in close match

ODESSA, Texas (September 30, 2026) – The UT Permian Basin women's soccer team pitched a shoutout for nearly 70 minutes, but in the end, it was Lubbock Christian University breaking through late in the 70th minute to earn a 1-0 victory over the Falcons.

The match started with an early corner kick by Ailene Rodarte leading to a shot on goal by Breanna Reagan two minutes in for UTPB (4-6-0 overall, 1-6-0 Lone Star Conference).

Then less than five minutes in, a free kick by LCU (6-2-3, 3-1-3) led to a shot off the left post before a second shot by the Lady Chaps resulted in a great save by Valeria Delgado.

The UTPB defense blocked three straight shots in front of Delgado during the 13th minute.

In all, LCU outshot UTPB by 10 (13-3) in the first half. In the first 27 minutes of the match, however, it was the Falcons who blocked seven shot attempts by the Lady Chaps while Delgado additionally racked up four saves.

UTPB had an opportunity to score first in the 57th minute, but the strike by Trinity Vasquez from the right side of the box trying to sneak it in toward the near side of the goal was instead saved by LCU's Emma Wright.

LCU had a free kick in the 63rd minute, but instead it resulted in a counterattack for UTPB that ended with another shot saved by Wright, this time from Mariela Ojeda.

Then in the 70th minute, UTPB fell victim to its third header goal allowed in the last two matches as Samantha Simpson found paydirt with her first goal of the season. On a corner kick, Journey Curs played the ball into Claire Jacobson, who had a shot blocked. The rebound headed back to Kaslee Roskelley, who played it into the box where Simpson headed it home.

It was the second year in a row UTPB and LCU were scoreless at the half before the Lady Chaps went on to earn the 1-0 victory with a late goal. Last year it was then-freshman Sydney Smith scoring the game-winner in the 81st minute.

Lubbock Christian finished its 2025 season with an 8-7-3 record, reaching the LSC Tournament as the No. 7 seed after posting a 6-5-2 league record. They took St. Edward's all the way to PKs in the tournament before the season ended. Coming into the match against the Falcons, LCU had posted a goals-against-average of just 1.10 on the season, the seventh-best mark in the LSC.

Delgado added eight more saves to her total in the second half and finished with 12 for the match, setting a new career-high in the process, but she could not overcome a 13-5 advantage on shots on goal for the Lady Chaps.

Reagan totaled half of UTPB's eight shots in the match.

Wright totaled five saves in the match for LCU. She came into the match ranking fourth in the LSC with 45 saves on the season, and had the best save percentage (.818) among those with more than 40 saves.

UTPB Head Women's Soccer Coach Garret Kull said after the match, "It was a really tough-fought game with a unique backdrop in West Texas with the lightening. On the night, LCU generated more chances that we did, but I felt like we had the better opportunities. That is a team that went to the LSC Tournament last year and we battled with them all night long. Vale in goal was just excellent and we are grateful she puts in a shift like that every game. I thought our outside backs, Trinity Vasquez, Luz Capuchino, Isabella Capra and Kally Calcaterra, were exceptional along with our center backs, Alyssa Pipes, Brooklyn Westfall and Haylee Huttenhow."

Next up, UTPB will head back to the road to play at No. 3 nationally-ranked Dallas Baptist University starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, from the Patriot Soccer Field in Dallas, Texas.
