ODESSA, Texas (April 1, 2026) – Wednesday marked the beginning of the second half of the Lone Star Conference season for The University of Texas Permian Basin softball team as the Falcons began a week of home-and-home doubleheaders against No. 12 Angelo State University. Hosting the Rambelles to kick off the two doubleheaders between the two teams on back-to-back days, UTPB fell 13-8 in game one, but put up a late fight with seven combined runs in the final two innings, including back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the seventh. However, in game two, the Falcons could not get anything going and were held to just two hits in what was a 10-0 shutout.
Â
Game 1 (UTPB 8, ASU 13):
- After a dropped fly ball in center field on the second batter of the game, three straight two-out RBI-hits for ASU scored a trio of unearned runs to make it 3-0 in the first inning.
- Jessica Cantrell (7-7) rebounded to pitch a 1-2-3 second inning, bookended by strong throws from shortstop by Keri Sanford.
- A popup double play to second base by Mia Serrato helped limit the Rambelles to one run in the third inning.
- The leadoff hitter in the top of the fourth inning, Abby Brand, gave it a ride and nearly hit it out to left field, but instead had to settle for a double. Then Serrato made another nice play to end the inning, this time running to make the catch on a popup behind second base to help Cantrell put up her second scoreless inning of the game.
- After being held to two hits in four innings by starting pitcher Ashleigh Dendas (9-4), UTPB tried to get onto the scoreboard down 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Kelsey Valo led off with a single up the middle against the new pitcher. With one out in the inning, Odalys Solis doubled down the right field line to put two runners in scoring position. Gabriella Cabrera followed with an RBI-groundout to third base to score the pinch runner, Ilyssa Foisy, and get the Falcons on the board.
- Despite getting on the board, UTPB could not hold down the ASU offense as No. 3-hitter Zoey Sifuentes got her only hit of the game with a two-out, two-run double down the line and just out of the reach of the diving left fielder to make it 8-1 in the sixth inning. Then an RBI-single up the middle on the next at bat by No. 4-hitter Tatiana Trotter scored Sifuentes and got the Rambelles to the run-rule margin.
- After an infield single by UTPB's No. 2-hitter, Carlee Quintero, in the first inning, she added another one-out single, this time on a blooper behind second base, in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- Angelina Arriaga followed with a single that just dropped in between the fielders in right center, putting two runners on base, and then a walk by Amathyst Gonzalez loaded the bases as UTPB threatened to extend the game.
- An RBI-walk by Valo did the job of extending the game, and still with just one out, the Rambelles had to bring back in their original starting pitcher, Dendas, to try and stop the rally.
- Then with two outs, Solis jumped all over the pitch by Dendas, delivering her third hit of the game with a two-run double down the left field line to make the score 9-4.
- Unfortunately for UTPB, three softly hit RBI-singles led to the first three runs of a four-run inning for ASU in the top of the seventh. Cabrera put it all on the line, running into the fence in foul ground in right field to record the second out of the inning, but back-to-back hit by pitches scored another run before a flyout to Cabrera to finally get it to the bottom of the seventh.
- Those runs in the top of the seventh would be costly as UTPB scored four runs of its own in the bottom half, matching ASU's scoring output in each of the final two innings.
- Gonzalez and Valo provided some sparks in the bottom of the seventh, first with a two-out, three-run home run to right center field by Gonzalez, followed by a solo home run to center field by Valo.
- Solis was 3-for-5 while Quintero and Valo both added two hits for UTPB.
- Trotter, the LSC Preseason Player of the Year, finished 4-for-4 with four RBI-singles for the Rambelles while No. 2 hitter Kylie Forney was 3-for-4 with four runs scored.
Â
Game 2 (UTPB 0, ASU 10):
- Game two was scoreless until the fourth inning.
- After scoring 12 runs on 17 hits in game one, the Rambelles scored 10 runs on 10 hits in game two, but their effort was aided by eight walks in the night cap.
- Priscilla Medina (3-9) struck out the side swinging while leaving the bases loaded in a scoreless top of the first inning.
- Medina was then able to strand a one-out walk at third base in the second inning, getting a groundball to Valo, who just beat out the runner in a race to first base.
- After a leadoff walk, Medina left two runners on in the third inning, making it six runners left on base through three scoreless innings by the ASU offense.
- The only hit in the first three innings for the Rambelles was an infield single to lead off the game.
- UTPB's first hit of the game was a single hitting off the first base bag by Solis, her fourth hit of the day, to lead off the bottom of the third inning.
- Foisy followed with a good battle in which she drew a full-count walk to put two runners on with no outs, but a lineout double play to short ended any momentum the Falcons had trying to score the first run of the game.
- It took just one pitch for Taylor Haywood to jump all over the offering from Medina and smash a leadoff double to the left center field gap and quickly put a runner in scoring position for ASU in the top of the fourth.
- Two pitches later, Greysen Collins roped an RBI-double down the left field line to open the scoring.
- In all, ASU opened up the fourth inning with three straight doubles against Medina, and then Presley Crawford came in, got back-to-back outs, and was one strike away from getting out of the inning before an RBI-single up the middle made it a three-run fourth inning.
- Playing in a little bit at third base, Sifuentes made a great stop on a one-hopper look routine for the first out in the bottom of the fourth.
- Sifuentes then absolutely destroyed a two-run home run to left field to make it 6-0 in the top of the sixth inning, the second three-run inning of the game for the Rambelles, who just like in game one, scored three runs in the sixth inning and four runs in the seventh to pull away late.
- Sifuentes has earned four weekly awards this season, the most in the LSC. She has been named the LSC Freshman of the Week three times and the LSC Hitter of the Week once. Just announced on Wednesday, Sifuentes was also named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Player of the Year Watchlist. Sifuentes is featured as one of the 15 selections from the South Central Region and one of 118 selections from across the country. She is also one of just three freshmen from the region to find her name on the watchlist. Coming into the series with UTPB, Sifuentes leads all freshmen in Division II with 15 doubles and 42 RBI's, with both marks ranking in the top-10 among all players in the country.
- Quintero's third hit of the day was a two-out single through the right side in the bottom of the sixth, helping UTPB to load the bases, but the Falcons came up empty after a popup to second base.
- Making her first start of the season, Bri Waters (2-0) pitched all seven innings of the two-hit, complete-game shutout for ASU.
- The Rambelles finished game two with five doubles and seven stolen bases.
Â
Team Records:
- UTPB falls to 12-21 overall and 3-19 in the LSC while No. 12 ASU improves to 29-8 and 18-4.
- Last season, the Rambelles went 47-14 overall and 34-10 in conference play. They advanced to the LSC Tournament semifinals and the South Central regional finals.

Coach's Quote:
- UTPB Head Softball Coach David Martinez said, "Today highlighted one of those things that Coach Brooke and I really try to emphasize, which is to fight, never quit, and to keep on pushing until the last out. We were proud of the girls for their fight today, we just came up short in the end. Hopefully we can roll that kind of fight over and into tomorrow. We had a lot of positive things that we saw today that hopefully tomorrow we can capitalize on and give us some confidence. Defensively, yes, we had a couple of miscues, but overall I thought the infield was really solid and the outfield made some plays as well. In the second game, we just did not hit with runners on base, but Priscilla had a good first three innings and Presley came in for relief as we held them and stayed in the game for the first five innings."
Next Up: UT Permian Basin is back in action tomorrow, Thursday, April 2, playing on the road against this same Angelo State team. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. from Mayer Field in San Angelo, Texas.
