Cantrell goes the distance in battle with No. 7 Rambelles

ODESSA, Texas (March 28, 2025) – Freshman right-handed pitcher Jessica Cantrell tossed a complete game in game two against No. 7 nationally-ranked Angelo State University on Friday and had the Falcons tied going into the final three innings. Ultimately, UTPB fell 4-2 in game two and dropped a 10-1 score in six innings in game one against the Rambelles.

Game 1 (UTPB 1, ASU 10):
  • ASU scored five runs in the second inning after a leadoff home run to center field by Zoey De Baca was later followed by a two-RBI double to left center field by Laylonna Applin and a two-run home run again to center field by Tatiana Trotter on back-to-back at bats.
  • In all, the Rambelles led 8-0 after three innings, but relief pitcher Emery Aguilar was able to toss back-to-back scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth innings while the UTPB offense broke through in the bottom of the fifth to extend the game for one more inning.
  • With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Mia Serrato singled up the middle and then scored all the way from first base on a on a double to left field by Kaylee Moses.
  • It was just UTPB's second and third hits of the game, two of which came from Moses (2-for-2).

Game 2 (UTPB 2, ASU 4):
  • After a hard hit right back to her and off her body on the first at bat of the game, Cantrell (4-11) rebounded to limit the Belles to just one run on a wild pitch in the first inning. She then left the bases loaded after back-to-back flyouts in the second inning, and left a runner on third with a foul out to the catcher, Lilly Chavez, behind home plate in the third inning.
  • Taylor Ramirez came crashing in for a diving catch in right field to help Cantrell put up her third straight scoreless inning in the fourth.
  • UTPB's first hit of the game was an RBI-double to right center field by Kelsey Valo to tie the game at 1-1 with one out in the bottom of the fourth. However, a pickoff between third base and home plate would come back to cost the Falcons as Carlee Quintero followed with a single to center field that otherwise would have scored a run and given the Falcons the lead.
  • In the next half inning, a hard-hit grounder to Keri Sanford at short resulted in a leadoff single for the Belles in the top of the fifth, and after a stolen base and a sacrifice bunt to move the runner to third base, a go-ahead RBI-single to center field made it 2-1 ASU.
  • ASU added to its lead in the fifth inning when a two-out double to left field was later followed by a double steal of second base and home plate to allow the Belles to literally "steal a run".
  • A diving catch in center field by Aguilar heading back toward the fence ended a 1-2-3 top of the sixth inning for Cantrell, but a solo home run to left field, the second home run of the day by Trotter, made it 4-2 with one out in the top of the seventh.
  • The final half inning saw UTPB load the bases with one out after a walk by Cantrell, putting her on first base as the potential tying run. From there, Lauren Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Quintero and make it 4-2, but then with a 3-1 count, the final Falcons' hitter went down swinging to end the game.
  • Cantrell finished with 10 hits, four total runs, three earned runs and just one walk against her in seven innings.
  • For ASU, Cheyenne Floyd (15-5) pitched the first six innings and then returned in the seventh to record the final two outs. She finished by allowing two hits and one unearned run while striking out eight and not issuing a single walk in her 6.2 innings pitched. She surpasses 100 strikeouts on the season, is holding opponents to a .170 batting average, and is ranked in the top-six in NCAA Division II in wins.

Team Records:
  • UTPB falls to 6-30 overall and 1-25 in the Lone Star Conference while the No. 7 Rambelles are 28-8 on the season and 19-7 in LSC play.

Next Up: UT Permian Basin is back in action at home on Sunday, March 30, hosting Lubbock Christian University. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. from the UTPB Softball Park.
