Softball finishes 0-4 at Lubbock Sports College Invitational

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 8, 2025) – The University of Texas Permian Basin softball team dropped its final two games of the Lubbock Sports College Invitational on Saturday. The Falcons first fell 5-0 against Adams State University and then lost 4-2 against Chadron State University.

Game 1 (UTPB 0, Adams State 5):
  • ASU scored each of its runs in the first two innings of the game, starting off the top of the first with a single, a walk, an RBI-single, another walk, and then a sacrifice fly to lead 2-0.
  • The Grizzlies' three runs in the second inning came as one scored on a passed ball and two others scored on RBI-walks.
  • In all, ASU drew five walks and one hit by pitch and benefitted from one wild pitch and one passed ball all within the first two innings of the game.
  • The Falcons left two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the third, left runners at the corners in the fifth, left another runner at third base in the sixth, and left another runner in scoring position in the seventh inning.
  • Both teams finished with five hits, but UTPB left 10 runners on base.
  • Keri Sanford was 2-for-3 with a walk and Taylor Ramirez was 2-for-4. All five of UTPB's hits came from the top-three spots in the lineup.
  • Jessica Cantrell pitched the final 5.2 innings of the game allowing just one hit, no runs, two walks and seven strikeouts.

Game 2 (UTPB 2, Chadron State 4):
  • UTPB had three singles in the top of the first, including back-to-back singles by Sanford and Emery Aguilar to start the game, but a 5-3 groundball double play got two quick outs for the Eagles, and then a strikeout stranded two runners in scoring position.
  • Layla Torres (1-2) struck out the side in a 1-2-3 bottom of the first, but back-to-back strikeouts to end the second inning did not come before a leadoff walk and a squeeze bunt to score the first run of the game.
  • A run on a passed ball and an RBI-single to right field by Kylie Parker gave UTPB a momentary 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning before Chadron tied it in the bottom half with an unearned run on an error at third base with two outs in the inning.
  • After starting the game 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position, Chadron's Angelina Que came up with a two-out, two-run single to left center in the seventh inning that was just out of reach of Ramirez diving from center field. That would be the difference in the game.
  • Torres finished with the complete game and allowed seven hits, four total runs, three earned runs, six walks and nine strikeouts across six innings.
  • UTPB had just one baserunner over the final three innings, a two-out single by Aguilar in the fifth inning.
  • Aguilar was the lone Falcon with two hits in the contest.
  • The Falcons were set down 1-2-3 in the second, third, sixth and seventh innings.

Team Records:
  • UTPB is now .500 (4-4) on the season.
  • Adams State is now 2-8.
  • Chadron State is now 3-1.

Next Up: UTPB's final game of the Lubbock Sports College Invitational, scheduled for Sunday, February 9, has been canceled due to incoming cold weather in Lubbock.
