ODESSA, Texas (February 1, 2025) – The University of Texas Permian Basin softball team earned is third and fourth straight wins to start the 2025 season, finishing off a four-game sweep against Schreiner University with a close 3-2 win in the first game and a 10-1 win in just five innings in the second game on Saturday.

Game 1 (UTPB 3, Schreiner 2):
- Both teams scored twice in the third inning, and after starting pitcher Jessica Cantrell set the Mountaineers down in order in the top of the sixth inning, the Falcons' pinch runner, Mia Serrato, would score the winning run on a passed ball with two outs in the Falcons' half of the sixth.
- Cantrell (2-0) pitched another 1-2-3 inning in the seventh to finish with her second-straight complete game after pitching a shutout in her collegiate debut the day before.
- Cantrell allowed five hits, two total runs, just one earned run, and walked only one batter while adding seven strikeouts in seven innings.
- Taylor Ramirez had the lone extra-base hit of the game with a double to center field in the bottom of the second.
- Kaylee Moses was 3-for-3 and tied the game with an RBI-single to center field to score Ramirez.

Game 2 (UTPB 10, Schreiner 1):
- A pair of walks by Keri Sanford and Emery Aguilar to start the bottom of the first led to a pair of two-out RBI-singles by Moses and Samantha Rodriguez to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead after one inning.
- In addition to starting the game in the circle, Aguilar (1-0) aided her own cause with a two-run single to center field in the bottom of the second inning.
- Two batters later, Michaella Baker belted a three-run home run to left field, the first home run of the season for UTPB, making it a 7-0 Falcons' lead.
- Aguilar allowed just two base runners (one hit, one walk) while striking out six in the first three innings of the game.
- Relief pitcher Meghan Gattis earned three straight strikeouts to leave the bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning and then tossed a 1-2-3 top of the fifth to end it.
- Ramirez and Baker were both 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Sanford scored three runs from the top spot in the lineup.
- Baker hit both a home run and a double.

Opening Weekend Combined Statistical Leaders:
- Jessica Cantrell went 2-0 with two complete games, one shutout, and a 0.50 earned run average. She struck out 17 batters across 14 innings.
- Keri Sanford hit .615 (8-13) and led the team in hits (8), runs scored (8), total bases (10) and stolen bases (3-3).
- Kaylee Moses hit .500 (5-10) and led the team with five runs batted in.
Next Up: The Falcons will play at the Lubbock Sports College Invitational, hosted by Lubbock Christian University, next weekend (Feb. 7-9). UTPB will play five games in three days, beginning on Friday, February 7, with the hosts form LCU at 3 p.m. followed by its first matchup since 2019 against Sul Ross State University starting at approximately 5 p.m.
