Offense flows as women’s soccer earns first road win

PLANVIEW, Texas (September 19, 2024) – Andrea Garcia and Laura Perez both scored twice to help lead The University of Texas Permian Basin women's soccer team to its first road win of the season, 6-2, at Wayland Baptist University on Thursday evening.

It was the most goals in a match for the Falcons in 10 seasons. The last time they scored six or more goals, it was an 8-0 win over McMurry on October 24, 2014.

"This group of women has been making history for three consecutive years, and today they delivered an incredible performance," spoke Head Coach Carla Tejas. "Today we had our highest-scoring match in the last 10 years. It's all a testament to their hard work and dedication. Now, we need to rest physically and mentally as we prepare for the upcoming conference season."

After scoring in each of UTPB's previous two matches, Cassandra Ramirez notched the assist on the first goal of the match by Perez less than five minutes in. It was Ramirez's first assist since the first match of her freshman season (Aug. 25, 2022).

Goal number two came eight minutes later courtesy of Natalia Salas, and then UTPB answered a Lady Pioneers goal in the 21st minute with the first goal by Garcia less than 45 seconds later.

Three of UTPB's first four shots of the match resulted in a goal, and in all, the Falcons put seven of their eight shots in the first half on target, but it was not until shot number 16 of the match for UTPB that the Falcons found the back of the goal again. A great pass found Salas going up the middle of the field, and then she found Garcia for her second goal in the 70th minute.

Perez's second goal of the match came in the 77th minute. The final goal for the Falcons was scored in the 86th minute when a corner kick by Sophie Dionissiou was perfectly placed to the head of Vasoula Flaouna to make it 6-1.

UTPB finished the match by putting one third of its 21 shots on goal, and more goals were just inches away as Garcia hit the crossbar in the 51st minute and Perez hit a shot off the post 10 minutes later.

Garcia finished with six shots and three shots on goal and Perez put two of her three shots on target.

In addition, Kristel Chaves put all four of her shot attempts on goal while Salas did the same with all three of her shots.

Paula Camus made her first-career start in goal and finished with four saves compared to two goals allowed.

With the win, UTPB improved to 2-1-1 overall while WBU dropped to 1-5.

Next up, UTPB will try to carry its momentum into conference action as the Falcons open Lone Star Conference play at home against Team A&M International University starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25.
