Women’s soccer falls 1-0 at home

ODESSA, Texas (November 1, 2024) – The University of Texas Permian Basin women's soccer team battled tough in a 1-0 loss to St. Edward's University on Friday at the UTPB Soccer Field.

It was a defensive struggle with the lone goal of the match coming in the 21st minute when a turnover by the Falcons was followed by an unfortunate fall by the goalkeeper, leaving SEU's Tristyn Cabello with nothing but an open goal in front of her.

Cassandra Ramirez and Natalia Salas both fired two shots each while Paula Camus made three saves in goal.

Before the goal, UTPB had back-to-back chances around eight minutes in as the Falcons' first shot of the match came when Sophie Walker intercepted a pass played backward into the Hilltoppers' defensive third for a one-on-one opportunity against St. Edward's goalie Daria Schlumbohm. Schumbohm, the reigning Lone Star Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, made the diving stop, and then Salas's ensuing shot off the rebound ricocheted off the right post.

A pair of shots by Ramirez and Salas were saved by Schlumbohm in the 22nd and 23rd minutes, respectively, before Camus made her first two saves of the match in the 29th and 30th minutes.

In the second half, SEU hit the crossbar in the 59th minute before a shot by UTPB's Kristel Chaves was saved in the 64th minute, marking the fourth save by Schulmbohm and the final shot on goal of the match.

Shots on goal were even at four apiece while SEU outshot UTPB by just one overall (9-8).

UTPB (4-8-3 overall, 2-7-2 LSC) falls to 0-12-2 all-time against St. Edward's (7-7-2, 5-5-1) after tying the Hilltoppers during each of the previous two seasons.

It was also SEU's fifth shutout win in its last six matches as the Hilltoppers are making a case for the postseason.

Heading into the final week of the regular season, UTPB will play its final road match at Eastern New Mexico University at 8 p.m. Central Time / 7 p.m. Mountain Time, on Monday, November 4.
