Overmyer's Hat Trick Leads Falcons to Victory in Season Opener

Kaylee Overmyer had a strong start to the 2022 season in Thursday's win over the University of the Southwest (N.M.). The Kapaa, Hawaii, native tallied a hat trick to lead UT Permian Basin's Women Soccer squad to a 4-0 shutout victory over the visiting Mustangs in the debut of Head Coach Carla Tejas.

Overmyer wasted little time making an impact. The midfielder converted a penalty kick just five minutes into the matchup to put the Falcons on the board. Later in the first half, Overmyer received a marvelous pass from Cassandra Ramirez and drained a header to give UTPB a 2-0 advantage.

The senior playmaker found the net early in the second half. Overmyer nailed another penalty kick in the 51st minute to secure her first career hat trick. Then, in the 75th minute, a shot from Marian Valdes made it past the goalie to create a 4-0 lead. The Falcon defense, which was stingy throughout, held on late to secure the shutout triumph over Southwest.

Junior Jenna McEnaney got the start as goalkeeper and saw just one shot-on-goal in the entire match. The local product finished with one save in what was an all-around fantastic defensive outing.

Four of Overmyer's five shots were on target with three finding the net. It was the seniors first action since 2019 due to injuries.  Valdes had two shots, with one on-goal attempt and one goal. Collectively, UTPB out-shot the Mustangs 20-2 and had nine shots on-goal versus one for Southwest.

UTPB Women's Soccer is back in action Saturday at home. The Falcons (1-0) will play host to Sul Ross State as they look to match last year's season win total. Kickoff at the UTPB Soccer Field is set for 5 p.m. Download the UTPB Athletics App to follow the team all season long.
