Gonzalez Wraps Road Trip with Big Day

LAWTON, OK – Valerie Gonzalez led the UT Permian Basin bats in Sunday's doubleheader against the Cameron University Aggies at McMahon Field. Gonzalez turned in her best performance in game one, totaling three of her team's seven hits and two of three Falcon runs in the contest.

In addition to Gonzalez's presence in the leadoff spot, Aracely Araiza notched an RBI single in the opening frame for the Falcons. After slapping a base hit to right-center, Araiza reached second on the throw and moved up to third on an error while Gonzalez made her way home for the 1-0 advantage.

Later in the first inning, Julia Bumford put a ball in play and reached on an error while Araiza dashed home to give the Falcons their second run of the game, 2-0.

The Aggies pushed a first inning run of their own across home plate before tacking on a pair of homers in the second. When the dust settled, Cameron held a 4-2 advantage through two stanzas.

Back in the box for the third frame, Bumford slapped a single to right to score Gonzalez for her second run of the contest. This would be the final run brought across by UT Permian Basin in game one.

The Aggies brought home three via the long ball in the third inning before recording a 10-run fourth inning to secure the win, 17-3.

Araiza and Bumford each recorded an RBI in game two as well. Trailing 1-0 in the second inning, Bumford smacked a solo shot over the fence to bring the Falcons back in it, 1-1.

In the following frame, Araiza sent an RBI-base hit to center to score Aubree Beggs. In the fifth inning, Emily Andress recorded the team's third RBI, scoring Ashlynn Bradley to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead.

The three scores were not enough as the Aggies pushed across three runs in the final two frames to escape the twin bill with a 4-3 win.

Gonzalez went 4-for-6 on the afternoon, walking once and scoring twice in the split bill. Araiza and Bumford each recorded three total hits between the two games and each had a multi-hit effort in game two.

The Falcons will take a brief hiatus, returning to action on their home field on Friday, April 22 for a doubleheader against West Texas A&M. The first pitch of game one is slated for 3 p.m.  Download the UTPB Athletics App to follow the team all season long.
