Coming off the best start of her Falcon career Tuesday,
Destini Trahan followed that with another gem on Friday as UT Permian Basin won in their Lone Star Conference opener against Midwestern State. She struck out four and allowed just six hits for her fifth victory of the year.
The Falcons did all their damage early in the first game of the doubleheader.
Valerie Gonzalez and
Leslie Martinez got the action going with back-to-back singles.
Aracely Araiza followed with an infield hit to load the bases. After the next two hitters were retired,
Lani Graft worked a walk for the first run of the game.
In the second the Falcons got two on with two out for Araiza. On a 2-1 pitch, she ripped it into the right center gap to score
Aubree Beggs and Gonzalez for the 3-0 lead. The Mustangs plated two and had a chance in the sixth to tie the game but their rally was snuffed out by a double-play. Trahan quietly retired the side in the seventh for the 3-2 win.
The Falcon offense got a break early in the second game as Martinez reached third on an error by the left fielder. She'd score on a ground ball by Araiza for the lead three batters into the game. The Mustangs responded with three runs in the top of the second and the score remained there until the sixth.
Mia Quintero woke the bench up with an opposite field home run but the Mustangs scored five times in the top of the seventh to pull away 8-2.
Gonzalez, Araiza, Quintero, and
Julia Bumford all had a pair of hits on the afternoon.
Cynthia Ng had a strong start in game two allowing just three runs over 5.1 innings.
