Box Score 2 It's tough to have a better day at the plate than
Julia Bumford did on Friday. The sophomore blasted four home runs and picked up 11 RBI as UT Permian Basin Softball pushed across 25 runs in a doubleheader sweep. Bumford started the day going 3-for-3 with five RBI and one homer against Adams State before connecting on three homers for six RBI against Northern State. The Falcons have won five straight games, their longest winning streak since 2016.
The Falcons were ready to go from the very first pitch.
Valerie Gonzalez reached on an error and came around to score to give the Falcons the lead. Bumford started the rally in the second with a walk and eventually scored on a sac fly off the bat of
Ashlynn Bradley. After the Grizzlies took the lead in the third, Bumford came up with the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning. Her single to center plated a pair and put the Falcons back on top after three.
In the fourth the Falcons added to the lead with an RBI-triple by
Valerie Gonzalez. The Grizzlies wouldn't go away, striking for four runs in the fifth for the 7-5 lead. A double and a walk brought up Bumford who crushed one to center field off the scoreboard to give the Falcons the lead. Bradley brought home another run later in the inning on a sac fly before the Falcons drove in three more in the sixth for the 12-8 victory.
In the second game of the day, the offense kept on humming as Gonzalez led off with a triple.
Aracely Araiza singled her home for the lead just three batters into the game. Bumford followed and on an 0-2 pitch, put one over the scoreboard for the early 3-0 lead. In the third Gonzalez tripled again and came in to score on a single by
Leslie Martinez to extend the lead. After allowing a pair to the Wolves, the Falcons got them back on singles by
Lani Graft and Martinez to go up 6-2.
In the fifth the Falcons blew the game open in a loud way. Bumford hit her second of the contest and two pitches later,
Mia Quintero hit her fourth of the season to push the lead to six.
The Wolves made things interesting after a three-run home run in their half of the fifth, but it was Bumford who put to rest any chance of a comeback with a three-run shot of her own in the sixth. Quintero followed with a triple and scored on a throwing error. Gonzalez drove in an insurance run in the seventh for the 13-9 final.
The Falcons scored in all but one inning on the day.
Cynthia Ng picked up the win in the opening game while
Becky Berth picked up her third victory of the year in the second game.
