Brown’s Late Heroics Carries Falcons by Mustangs

With two-out in the seventh freshman Kortlyn Brown showed how clutch she is with a go ahead two-run single to lift UT Permian Basin Softball to a 3-1 win over Western New Mexico.  The Falcon offense had a solid day led by Aracely Araiza who had five hits, while April Arellano had three and Alice Marion, Brown, and Valerie Gonzalez all had multi-hit days.

The Falcons threatened early in game one getting runners in scoring position in the first inning, but they couldn't cash in.  In the third, the Falcons broke through with a rally started by an error allowing Marion to reach.  Arellano then worked a one-out walk to put two on.  Araiza singled to center to score Marion for the first run of the day.  In the fifth, the Mustangs tied the score on a double to set up some late heroics.

The seventh turned into a nail biter.  Singles by Arellano and Araiza and a walk to Choco Munoz loaded the bases with two outs.  Brown singled to right to plate Arellano and Araiza for the 3-1 lead. In the bottom half of the inning the Mustangs loaded the bases with only one out.  The Falcon defense proved to be the difference as Valerie Gonzalez cut down a ball in the gap then threw out the runner attempting to score to end the ball game.

The Falcons grabbed the lead early in game two.  Mia Quintero came in to score on a sac fly by Valerie Gonzalez for the first run of the contest.  In the third, Araiza drove in Rylie Reed with a double to centerfield before she later scored on a wild pitch for the 3-0 lead.  The Mustangs battled back to tie the score and force extra innings.  In the eighth, Choco Munoz did her part to be the hero.  She homered just inside the foul pole down the right field line for the 5-4 lead.  In the bottom half of the inning, the Falcons couldn't hold the lead as the Mustangs walked it off 8-4.
