UT Permian Basin freshman
Abrie Castillo had her best pitching performance of
the season and took a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh, but MSU Texas
took advantage of three baserunners with two outs in the seventh and won on a
pair of unearned runs in a 3-2 win over the Falcons in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Castillo, coming off of a five-inning shutout win over University of the
Southwest on Tuesday, held the Mustangs hitless over the first 20 outs of the
day on  Friday.
UTPB had the first breakthrough in the top of the seventh, breaking a scoreless
tie when
Vanessa Alonzo hit a single into center field with a pair of runners in
scoring position to score
Alicia Marion and
Jessica Gonzales.Â
Pitching with a 2-0 lead, Castillo got a pair of line outs to the outfield to
start off the seventh inning. Back-to-back walks put a pair of runners on base
for MSU Texas, and Bailey Wamsley broke up the no-hit bid with a single through
the left side that scored a run. Trailing 2-1, the Mustangs would take the win
during the next at bat on a dropped fly ball that allowed both base runners to
score.
Castillo ended the game allowing just four baserunners; two walks and a hit in
the seventh and one hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the third as she was charged
with three runs, only one earned, while striking out six Mustangs on the
afternoon.
Marion continued her hot streak at the plate, leading the Falcons with a pair of
hits and a run scored. Alonzo also added two hits with the pair of RBI.
The Mustangs took advantage of extra outs in game two of the doubleheader, scoring all eight of their runs unearned in an 8-0 defeat of UTPB.
Caycee Griffin and Carley Woolsey each homered for the Mustangs, Griffin with a three-run home run as part of a six-run bottom of the first.
Alonzo and
Valerie Gonzalez each had a base hit in game two in a pair of at-bats each.
The Falcons return home for non-conference action, hosting Sul Ross for a pair of games Tuesday afternoon at the UTPB Softball Field.
