Swimming and Diving hosts Southwestern for 2019 Senior Day

1/24/2019 3:51:00 PM

UT Permian Basin men's and women's swimming and diving teams make its first and last appearance at home this weekend with the Falcons swim against the Southwestern Pirates Saturday morning at 11 a.m at COM Aquatics in Midland. This weekend's meet will also be senior day for this year's seven seniors and admission is free for all spectators.

"We're really excited about this meet," said head coach Cameron Kainer. "This is our chance to show west Texas what we've been doing this season and what we're working on towards conference. It is a great opportunity for kids at COM Aquatics and the city of Odessa to come out and watch our teams swim and see what it's like to swim at the college level."

The Falcons return to action more than two months after last stepping into a competitive pool. UTPB last faced someone other than themselves Nov. 16-18 at the Southwest Shootout. Coming into competition after two months of practice, the Falcons are ready to face off against someone else.

"We've been doing a lot of racing in practice. We've done a lot of fast things off the blocks but we haven't had touchpads to see exactly what our times are," said Kainer. "It presents a little bit of a challenge where we've been racing each other over and over again, so this will be our first and last time getting up on the blocks before we go to conference. Looking at how we have been swimming I see the excitement in doing it for the first time in a while."

Saturday will give the Falcons one last chance to see how they're performing before the teams head to Cleveland, Miss., for the 2019 New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference Championships.

"Saturday gives us a great opportunity to see everyone's full resume, to see how we perform under pressure and how they do when they're tired and worn out from all the training we've done," noted Kainer. "It's the last opportunity  for everyone to show us what they've got before conference championships."
