UT Permian Basin softball broke a scoreless tie in extra innings in the top of the eighth, but Lubbock Christian scored a pair of one-out runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 victory in the doubleheader opener. The Lady Chaps then won 8-0 in five innings to close out the doubleheader.
Maritza Rojas helped her own cause in the top of the eighth, driving home Jessica Gonzalez from third after she was placed on second base as part of the international tiebreak rule. The Falcons would end up loading the bases but left all three runners stranded on base to end the inning.
Lindzi Clemmer and Sydney Beuthien won the game in the bottom of the eighth with back-to-back run-scoring singles to take the 2-1 win.
Rojas took the loss but threw 7.1 innings with just one earned run allowed. She struck out seven batters and gave up seven hits and one walk with one hit batter. She also led the Falcons with a pair of singles in the game.
Errors plagued the Falcons in game two as just a pair of Lubbock Christian's eight runs scored were earned in the 8-0 win.
Rojas again led UTPB on the offensive side, collecting a pair of hits in two officials at bats and reaching a third time on a HBP.
UTPB is on the road in non-conference action this weekend, traveling to Fort Worth for a pair of non-conference doubleheaders against Midland and Texas Wesleyan.
