Falcons Regroup to Take Pair at Sul Ross

UT Permian Basin swept a double header against Sul Ross State in Alpine to complete the season sweep on Tuesday. They won the first game 10-0 and took the second 4-2.

It was all offense for UTPB in the first half of the double header. They jumped out to an early 2-0 on a two-run home run by Adrianna Berzoza in the first inning. UTPB continued in the second inning with a two-run triple by April Arellano who came around to score later in the inning on an Abby Hernandez single. Arellano added an RBI single in the third to score Jessica Gonzalez and push the lead to 7-0.

UTPB scored two on an error in the fourth and Gonzalez knocked in another run on a single to push the lead to 10-0. Cindy Juarez was dominant only allowing three scattered hits over five innings and walked none to pick up her third victory of the season.

It took a late comeback for the Falcons to pull out a victory in the second game. Arellano continued her hot day with an RBI single to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Sul Ross answered back with an RBI single by Hailey Guillen in the second to tie the game and took a 2-1 lead on a base hit by Zuriah Leyva in the fourth.

It would remain 2-1 heading into the seventh when the UTPB bats came to life. Aubree Avila and Choco Munoz led off the inning with back to back singles. Hernandez followed with a single of her own to plate Avila and tie the game. Maritza Rojas singled to drive in Munoz and grab the lead for the Falcons. Hernandez would score on a throwing error and give UTPB the 4-2 lead. Sul Ross would pick up a pair of hits in the bottom half of the inning but couldn't score as UTPB held on for the win.

Juarez improved to 3-4 on the year with her win in the first game and Sloan Springfield pitched a complete game in the second game for her second win of the season. Both pitchers combined to walk none in 12 innings. Ally Guerrero and Jackie Gonzalez took the losses for Sul Ross.

Gonzalez finished the day 3-4 with a triple and an RBI for the Falcons. Arellano was red hot going 4-6 with a triple, four RBI and a run scored. Berzoza finished with a pair of hits, including the home run, and two RBI. Hernandez added four hits and a pair of runs scored while Avila had two hits in the second game.

UTPB returns home for a Lone Star Conference weekend series with Eastern New Mexico starting Friday night.
