UT Permian Basin Rallies for Doubleheader Sweep at Southwest

UT Permian Basin swept a double-header against the University of the Southwest on the road Tuesday, taking game one 3-1 before coming back for a 6-4 win in game two.

Strong pitching propelled UTPB only allowing two earned runs and walking only one batter over both games.

UTPB started the first game slowly only having three players reach base in the first five innings.  Southwest scored in the first on a sacrifice fly by Gabby Heckman.  UTPB got one-out singles in the fifth from Jessica Gonzalez and Aubree Avila before Alyssa Lopez drove both of them in with a triple to take the lead.  April Arellano followed that up with a two-out single to drive her in and give UTPB a 3-1 lead.  Sloan Springfield shut the door allowing three hits over 3.2 innings.

UTPB started the second game fast scoring three in the first inning off Southwest starting pitcher Gabby Heckman.  Lizzie Souza and Lopez started off with back to back singles before Arellano tripled for the early 2-0 lead.  She came around to score on an RBI ground out by Alexis Watson.

Southwest chipped away with two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the sixth but UTPB's offense did the job.  They brought in two in the sixth when Abby Hernandez reached on a fielder's choice scoring Adrianna Berzoza, who came around to eventually score off of an error.  Souza homered in the top of the seventh to give relief pitcher Aubree Avila some breathing room in the 6-4 victory.

Berzoza led the team in the first game with two hits and stole a base while Lopez had two RBI in the win.  Souza and Arellano had two hits a piece while Arellano drove in two runs to lead the team in the second game.  Avila went 2.2 innings in the second game only allowing two hits and no earned runs while picking up the win, her first of the season.  Springfield picked up her first win of the season in the first game.

UTPB travels to Mesquite, Texas for five games this weekend starting with a double header on Friday against Southern Arkansas and Northwestern Oklahoma State.
