Big First Inning Pushes Aggies Over Falcons

UT Permian Basin softball broke through with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but a four-run top of the first by Cameron helped the Aggies to a 5-3 win over the Falcons Saturday afternoon at the UTPB Softball Field in Odessa.

A two-run home run by Kaitlyn Alvarado in Cameron's second at bat in the top of the first gave the Aggies a quick 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, Madyson Marvulli drove a ball down the left field line with a pair of runners on to score both for a 4-0 lead.

Trailing 5-0, UTPB got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth, scoring its first when Maritza Rojas singled through the hole in the left side of the infield to drive home Adrianna Berzoza.

Ashlynn Williams later came up to drive in Rojas and Munoz on a ball that dropped in shallow left field to close within the game-ending score of 5-3.

Rojas came in to start the top of the fifth and threw three scoreless innings, striking out five batters while allowing a pair of hits and a walk.

Rylee Willmon picked up her second win of the weekend, giving up three runs, one earned, off nine hits and a pair of walks. She struck out nine batters in seven innings.

Rojas also put in work in the batters box, ending the game 3-4 at the plate with a run and RBI. Lizzie Souza added a pair of base hits while Berzoza reached twice on a hit and walk.

The Falcons close out a 10-game home stand this Tuesday, hosting University of the Southwest Tuesday in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
