Softball Closes Out 2016 with Split at University of the Southwest

UT Permian Basin softball wrapped up its 2016 season Tuesday afternoon as senior Kim Alonzo threw a complete game to earn her fourth win of the season in a 2-1 win at University of the Southwest. The Mustangs had previously scored five unanswered runs in taking the opener 5-4 in Hobbs, N.M.

The Falcons started out hot in game one, taking an early 1-0 lead on a JJ Von Oesen single into right to score Melissa Zuniga.

Zuniga added to the total in the bottom of the second when her triple to right drove home Miley McKee and Mallory Hall for a 3-0 advantage.

University of the Southwest started its comeback in the bottom of the third on an RBI single into center, and pulled within a pair of runs in a fielder's choice RBI in the fourth.

The winning runs came in the fifth when the Mustangs trailed by one on a passed ball, and then took the lead on a two-run double into right field.

Zuniga and Von Oesen each had a pair of hits for the UTPB offense, with Zuniga scoring twice and driving in a pair.

UT Permian Basin struck fast in game two, grabbing a run in the top of the first when Zuniga scored on an Adrianna Berzoza double into right.

Von Oesen added a second run in the third when she reached on a bases-loaded fielder's choice that scored Ashlynn Williams on the play.

Alonzo worked out of trouble in the seventh when Southwest put a pair on with no outs in the inning. With runners on the corners, she got a double play ball on a groudner to short that scored the runner at third, and after Southwest put the tying run on first, ended the game with a ground out to first.

Alonzo had her best outing of the season in her final game at UTPB, giving up a single run off of eight hits. She walked none and struck out a pair.

Zuniga again had two hits out of the leadoff spot for UTPB to lead all Falcons.
