Softball Puts Together Complete Team Effort in Saturday Sweep of Newman

UT-Permian softball played strong defense all night long and benefitted from timely hitting in earning a pair of 7-3 and 3-2 wins over Newman Saturday night as UTPB opened up its final home season of the year on the turf at the Odessa High School field next to Ratliff Stadium.

UTPB came from behind with a huge sixth ining in game one. Trailing 3-1 after giving up three runs in the top of the inning on a 3-run home run, Daisy Aguilar responded with a deep two run shot that tied the game at 3-3. Mallory Hall later came up with the bases loaded and drove in a run on a single into left for a 4-3 lead, and another run scored on a wild pitch for a two-run advantage. Melissa Zuniga then brought in the two remaining baserunners on a double to left for the 7-3 lead.

Kim Alonzo earned the win in game one, throwing the final two innings and allowing a run on one base hit.

The Falcons benefitted from home runs again in game two, taking a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run JJ Von Oesen bomb.

Tied 2-2 late in the contest, Adriana Berzoza came through in the bottom of the sixth with a lead-off home run to straightaway center field that barely cleared the top of the outfield wall for the 3-2 advantage.

Chelsae Faries went the distance in the circle, earning her first win of the season while holding Newman to two runs off of seven hits. She struck out three and walked two.

UTPB looks to go for the sweep Sunday morning at 10:30. The team will honor seniors Irene Valdez, JJ Von Oesen and Kim Alonzo in a ceremony following the last home game of the season. The location for the game, whether to be played at UTPB's home field or back at the Odessa High School field, will be determined early Sunday morning.
