Softball Picks Up FIrst Win of 2015 in Split Against University of the Southwest

UTPB Softball eanred its first win of the 2015 season Tuesday afternoon, picking up a 3-2 win over University of the Southwest on its home field in Odessa. The Mustangs came-from-behind to defeat the Falcons 7-5 in the back end of the twinbill.

The Falcons struck first right away in their first time at the dish, scoring their first run on a ground out by Aurora Burks to drive home Irene Valdez from third. Miley McKee later doubled down the line to left, driving in JJ Von Oesen from first for a 2-0 lead.

Southwest got both back in its half of the fourth, scoring a pair on a two-run double into center.

Mallory Hall drove in the game-winning run in the UTPB fifth on an infield single off the glove of a diving shortstop that rolled into the hole, deep enough to allow Valdez to score from second on the play.

The Mustangs had an opportunity to score in the seventh when the leadoff batter reached on an error, but UTPB starter Chelsae Faries got out of the inning unscathed for the 3-2 win.

Faries won her first collegiate game with a pair of runs off of three hits and a pair of walks in the complete game while striking out a pair. Hall led the UTPB offense with a pair of hits in three trips to the plate.

UTPB took its first lead in game two with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second after trailing 2-1. Raquel Carrasco singled into left to score Adrianna Berzoza, and later executed a double steal on a play to score Nikki Salazar from third.

Southwest came up with three runs in the fifth to go back ahead and added a lone run in each of the sixth and seventh to hold off the Falcons despite UTPB scoring twice in the sixth and loading the bases in the seventh.

Berzoza, Salazar and Carrasco each had a pair of hits while Berzoza scored twice in the second game and Carrasco drove in a pair.

The Falcons travel to Las Vegas, Nev., later this week for six games at the 2015 Desert Stinger Friday through Sunday.
