UTPB softball's season came to a close Friday with a 2-1 loss to Texas A&M International in the first elimination game at the 2014 Heartland Conference Championships in San Antonio.
In a pitchers battle between the Falcons
Desiree Valero and Sarah Johnson of the Dustdevils, UTPB struck first to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth. A triple by
Aurora Burks after
Miley McKee led off the inning with a single scored the first run of the day for either team.
Valero kept TAMIU scoreless into the bottom of the seventh and got the first two batters of the inning out on groudn balls, but the Dustdevils pieced together three straight hits to get their first run of the game. Texas A&M International ended the game as an error allowed Mariena Gallardo to score unearned to end the game for a 2-1 Texas A&M International win.
Valero gave up just five hits while walking none in the 6.2 inning appearance. She struck out four and allowed a lone earned run. Johnson also handed out no free passes and gave up five hits while striking out two.
